Pixar's 2011 sequel in which Lightning McQueen competes in races around the world is Cars 2.
Cars 2 follows McQueen as he enters the World Grand Prix, an international competition staged in Japan, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Mater accompanies him and becomes entangled in a spy investigation involving secret agents and a conspiracy.
The sequel shifts emphasis from the first film's small-town character story to a globe-spanning action adventure. Mater's accidental role in the espionage plot gives the film its comic viewpoint, while McQueen remains the principal racing character.
Cars 2 was directed by John Lasseter and Brad Lewis. It was released in 2011 as the second theatrical feature in the Cars franchise, following the original Cars from 2006.
