What is the name of Peter Jackson's visual effects company?

The story behind the answer

Peter Jackson's visual effects company was Weta Digital. Founded in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1993 by Jackson, Richard Taylor, and Jamie Selkirk, the company was created to produce digital effects for Jackson's film Heavenly Creatures.

Weta Digital became internationally famous for its work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy, where it developed digital environments, creatures, and massive battle sequences. Its proprietary MASSIVE software helped animate thousands of individually behaving digital characters, making large-scale armies appear more realistic.

The company also created the visual effects for films including King Kong, Avatar, The Jungle Book, and Avatar: The Way of Water. A common mix-up is Weta Workshop, the related but separate company known for physical props, costumes, armor, miniatures, and creature effects.

In 2021, Peter Jackson sold Weta Digital's technology division to Unity for $1.625 billion. The remaining visual-effects company was renamed Weta FX, so Weta Digital is the historically correct name associated with Jackson's visual-effects studio.
