In the Book of Genesis, Noah’s ship is called the Ark.
The English word “ark” comes through older languages from a term meaning a chest, box, or container. In Genesis, the Ark is a large vessel built to preserve Noah, his family, and selected animals during the Flood. The story does not call it a ship by a personal name, and it does not give it a named captain other than Noah.
The word can cause confusion because “ark” is also used for the Ark of the Covenant in the Hebrew Bible. These are different objects in different stories. Noah’s Ark is a vessel for survival; the Ark of the Covenant is a sacred chest associated with Israel’s covenant traditions.
Genesis describes the Ark’s dimensions and materials but does not provide a decorative title or individual proper name. “Noah’s Ark” is the standard English designation used for the biblical vessel.
