What is the name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional writing system used for many Elvish scripts?

The story behind the answer

Tengwar is J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional writing system used for many Elvish scripts.

Tengwar, also called the Fëanorian characters, is an alphabetic writing system created by the Elf Fëanor in Tolkien’s mythology. Tolkien designed it with systematic signs for consonants and vowel marks. Different languages could use the same general writing system with different conventions.

The Tengwar appear throughout Tolkien’s stories and illustrations. The One Ring inscription is one of the best-known examples, although its language is the Black Speech rather than an Elvish language. Tengwar is therefore the name of the script, not the name of the words written in it.

Tolkien’s interest in real historical languages and scripts influenced his invented writing systems. Another major Middle-earth script is Cirth, whose angular letters are especially associated with the Dwarves. Cirth and Tengwar are separate systems.
