What is the name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional land where the Shire is located?

The story behind the answer

The Shire is located in Middle-earth in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fiction.

Middle-earth is the main inhabited region of Tolkien’s legendarium during the periods covered by The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It contains the Shire, Rohan, Gondor, Mordor, Rivendell, and many other lands central to those stories.

The term does not mean the entire universe or planet in Tolkien’s mythology. It refers to a particular region of Arda, the world created by Tolkien, and is associated especially with the histories of Elves, Dwarves, Men, Hobbits, and other peoples.

Valinor is a blessed land in Aman, west of Middle-earth. Beleriand is a major region in the older First Age stories, while Númenor is an island kingdom of Men that existed before the events of The Lord of the Rings. These places are connected to Tolkien’s mythology but are not the Shire’s location.
