Hogwarts is J.K. Rowling’s fictional school of witchcraft and wizardry.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the main educational setting in the Harry Potter novels. It is located in Scotland and is generally attended by young witches and wizards from Great Britain and Ireland, beginning at about age eleven.
Students are sorted into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger are all members of Gryffindor, while many major rivals and antagonists are associated with Slytherin.
Hogwarts is not the only magical school in Rowling’s wider wizarding world. Beauxbatons Academy is associated with France, Durmstrang Institute is located in northern Europe, and Ilvermorny is a North American school introduced in later wizarding-world material. Those names therefore should not be substituted for Hogwarts.
