What is the name of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts house in J.K. Rowling’s books?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter belongs to Gryffindor in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry divides students among four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house is associated with particular qualities. Gryffindor traditionally values courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry, while its emblem is a lion and its associated colors are scarlet and gold.

The Sorting Hat places Harry in Gryffindor at the start of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Harry briefly considers Slytherin, but his own preference helps influence the result. His closest friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, are also sorted into Gryffindor.

The house becomes the main setting for Harry’s school friendships and many of the series’ central conflicts. Although Gryffindor is often portrayed heroically, Rowling’s books also show that students in every house can have varied personalities and motivations.
