Green Day's first EP, released in 1989, was 1,000 Hours. It arrived through the independent Lookout Records label and marked the band's first official release under the name Green Day.

The group had previously been known as Sweet Children, a name used by Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and drummer John Kiffmeyer. Shortly before the EP came out, they changed their name, reportedly partly to avoid confusion with another band called Sweet Baby. The three members recorded the EP at Art of Ears Studio in San Francisco in early 1989.
