What is the name of Google’s web browser rendering engine used by Chrome?

The story behind the answer

Blink is the web browser rendering engine used by Google Chrome.

Google announced Blink in 2013 as a fork of WebKit, the rendering engine Chrome had previously used. The change allowed Google and the Chromium project to develop the engine with a different architecture and set of implementation priorities.

Blink is used not only by Google Chrome but also by many Chromium-based browsers, including Microsoft Edge and Opera. It works with Google’s V8 JavaScript engine, although the rendering engine and JavaScript engine are separate components.

A common mix-up is answering Chromium, which is the open-source browser project, or Chrome, which is Google’s branded browser. WebKit was Chrome’s earlier rendering engine and remains associated with browsers such as Apple’s Safari.
