What is the name of Gandalf’s sword in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Glamdring is the name of Gandalf’s sword in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Glamdring was forged in Gondolin during the First Age by the Elves. Tolkien describes it as the sword of Turgon, king of Gondolin, and gives it the byname “Foe-hammer.” Its history connects the events of The Hobbit with the much older legends later published in The Silmarillion.

Gandalf found Glamdring in the trolls’ hoard during the journey described in The Hobbit. The same hoard contained Orcrist, which became Thorin Oakenshield’s sword, and a smaller blade that Bilbo named Sting.

Readers sometimes confuse Glamdring with Andúril, Aragorn’s sword, or with Orcrist, the companion blade from Gondolin. Glamdring remains Gandalf’s weapon after its discovery and is recognized by its blue-white glow when orcs are near.
