Frodo Baggins’s gardener in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is Samwise Gamgee.

Samwise, usually called Sam, lives at Bag End and works for Frodo before the quest begins. He is drawn into the journey when Gandalf orders him to accompany Frodo from Hobbiton. Although Sam starts as an ordinary gardener rather than a warrior or scholar, his loyalty and practical courage become essential to the mission.

Sam carries much of the burden after Frodo is weakened by the One Ring and Shelob’s attack. He briefly bears the Ring himself, rescues Frodo from the tower of Cirith Ungol, and helps him reach Mount Doom. After returning to the Shire, Sam marries Rosie Cotton and becomes an important figure in restoring the Shire.

Sam is often confused with the other hobbits in the Fellowship. Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took are fellow companions, but neither is Frodo’s gardener or his principal companion throughout the journey.
