What is the name of David Bowie's Diamond Dogs persona?

The story behind the answer

David Bowie’s *Diamond Dogs* persona is Halloween Jack. The character is introduced in the album’s title track as a flamboyant figure ruling a lawless, post-apocalyptic Manhattan.

Halloween Jack is described as living atop Manhattan Chase, a fictionalised version of the One Chase Manhattan Plaza skyscraper. He presides over the “diamond dogs,” a gang of street youths in the album’s dystopian setting. The persona helped Bowie connect the record’s glam-rock theatricality with its darker urban-future narrative.

The character emerged after Bowie retired Ziggy Stardust in 1973. Unlike Ziggy, Halloween Jack was not built around an extraterrestrial rock-star story; he belonged to the harsher world Bowie created for *Diamond Dogs*. The album itself blended several unfinished ideas, including an adaptation of George Orwell’s *Nineteen Eighty-Four* and a proposed Ziggy musical.

Halloween Jack should not be confused with Major Tom, an earlier Bowie character from “Space Oddity,” or Nathan Adler, who appears in the later *1. Outside* narrative. The Blind Prophet is also unrelated. Halloween Jack is the canonical *Diamond Dogs* persona.
