What is the name of C.S. Lewis’s space-travel novel featuring the philologist Elwin Ransom?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet is C.S. Lewis’s space-travel novel featuring the philologist Elwin Ransom.

Published in 1938, the book follows Ransom after he is abducted and taken to Malacandra, a planet that humans call Mars. Lewis uses the journey to explore language, morality, colonial ambition, and the possibility of intelligent life beyond Earth.

Ransom is a philologist, a scholar of language and historical texts. His knowledge becomes important because communication with Malacandra’s inhabitants is central to the story. The novel’s scientific setting is imaginative rather than a prediction of modern planetary science.

Out of the Silent Planet is the first volume of Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Its sequels are Perelandra, published in 1943, and That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. The books are sometimes called the Ransom Trilogy because Ransom is the central character of the first two and remains important to the third.
