What is the name of C.S. Lewis’s science-fiction trilogy’s main protagonist?

The story behind the answer

Elwin Ransom is the main protagonist of C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy.

Ransom is a philologist and university scholar who appears across Lewis’s three science-fiction novels: Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. The trilogy follows his encounters with alien worlds, spiritual powers, and the moral consequences of scientific and political ambition.

In the first novel, Ransom is taken to Mars, known in the book by the name Malacandra. Later installments place him in different settings and expand the story’s philosophical and theological scope.

Lewis originally used the surname Ransom partly as a playful reference to his friend J.R.R. Tolkien, whose first name was John Ronald Reuel. The other names in the choices belong to characters from different Lewis works, which can make the trilogy easy to confuse with his fantasy fiction.
