What is the name of Captain Picard's ready-room fish?

The story behind the answer

Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s ready-room fish was named Livingston.

Livingston was a lionfish kept in a saltwater aquarium in Picard’s ready room aboard the USS Enterprise-D. The fish became a recurring background detail throughout The Next Generation, quietly appearing while Picard handled diplomacy, ship crises, and visitors such as Q.

The name was not prominently established in dialogue, which is why viewers sometimes remember only “Picard’s fish.” Production material identifies Livingston as an unofficial name given by the Star Trek crew, honoring producer and director David Livingston. That makes the name a behind-the-scenes detail as much as an in-universe one.

Livingston also became part of the show’s visual continuity. In “Chain of Command,” Captain Edward Jellico orders the fish removed from the ready room, but it is returned after Picard resumes command. The fish is sometimes confused with Spot, Data’s cat, or Porthos, Captain Archer’s dog—both are pets from other Star Trek series.
