What is the name of Bilbo Baggins’s birthday date in The Lord of the Rings?

Bilbo Baggins’s birthday in The Lord of the Rings is 22 September.

Bilbo was born on 22 September 2890 of the Third Age, according to Tolkien’s chronology. His birthday is especially important because he and Frodo Baggins share it. Bilbo’s eleventy-first birthday party opens the story of The Fellowship of the Ring and marks the moment when he gives up the Ring and leaves the Shire.

The date is also the birthday of Frodo, who was born on 22 September 2968 of the Third Age. This shared date helps connect the two hobbits and explains why the celebration at Bag End is such a major event in the narrative.

Readers sometimes remember 21 September because The Hobbit was first published on that date in 1937. Those are different Tolkien milestones: 21 September is a publication date, while 22 September is Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday.
