Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about Black womanhood and family history is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, following the premiere of an hour-long film on HBO. The album combines R&B, soul, pop, rock, hip-hop, blues, and country influences. Its visual presentation uses poetry, imagery, and scenes connected to Black history and Southern culture.
The project includes songs such as “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Daddy Lessons,” and “All Night.” It explores betrayal, anger, grief, reconciliation, heritage, motherhood, and resilience. Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, and daughter Blue Ivy Carter appear in the film.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and became Beyoncé’s sixth consecutive number-one album on the Billboard 200. It earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, while “Formation” won Best Music Video and became one of her most influential songs.
