What is the name of Assassin’s Creed’s device for exploring genetic memories?

The story behind the answer

The Animus is the device used in Assassin’s Creed to explore genetic memories.

In the series’ fiction, the Animus allows a person to relive memories inherited through a bloodline. It does not send the user physically into the past; instead, it presents reconstructed experiences based on genetic information. This device provides the narrative link between modern characters and historical protagonists.

Desmond Miles is connected to the Animus in the early games by the Abstergo company. His sessions let players experience the lives of ancestors such as Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze. The machine also explains why the series can shift between historical periods while retaining a modern storyline.

The term is sometimes confused with Helix, a later entertainment and memory platform in the franchise. Eagle Vision is an Assassin ability for perceiving people and objects, while an Apple of Eden is an Isu artifact. None of those names refers to the memory-exploration machine itself.
