What is the name for the person who carries a golfer's clubs and offers advice during a round?

The story behind the answer

The person who carries a golfer’s clubs and offers advice during a round is called a caddie.

A caddie carries the player’s bag, helps select clubs, reads greens, discusses strategy, and may provide information about distances and course conditions. Caddies also commonly repair divots, rake bunkers, and tend the flagstick. The player, however, remains responsible for making the final decision and following the Rules of Golf.

The word comes from the Scots caddie or cawdy, which developed from the French cadet. In the 17th century it referred to a student military officer, then broadened to mean someone doing odd jobs. By the 19th century, it had acquired its golfing meaning. Caddie is also commonly spelled caddy, and golfers sometimes use looper as a nickname for the role.
