What is the maximum weight of a golf ball under the Rules of Golf?

The story behind the answer

The maximum weight of a golf ball under the Rules of Golf is 1.62 ounces, more precisely 1.620 ounces avoirdupois.

That limit equals 45.93 grams. The rule is a maximum, not a target that every ball must reach: there is no prescribed minimum weight, so a manufacturer could produce a lighter ball as long as it meets the other equipment standards.

Weight is only one part of a conforming ball’s specification. A legal ball must also have a diameter of at least 1.680 inches and satisfy requirements covering spherical symmetry, initial velocity and overall distance. The R&A and the United States Golf Association administer the equipment rules and test balls for compliance.

A common mix-up is to round the figure to 1.5 or 1.75 ounces, but neither is the official limit. The number is also expressed in avoirdupois ounces, the everyday measurement system used for ordinary weights, rather than the different troy-ounce system used for precious metals.
