The maximum display resolution supported by the PlayStation 5 is 8K.
Sony designed the PS5 with HDMI 2.1 video output and advertised support for 8K displays, alongside 4K output at refresh rates up to 120 Hz and variable refresh rate features. An 8K image has a resolution of 7680 by 4320 pixels, giving it four times as many pixels as 4K and sixteen times as many as 1080p.
The wording “supported” is important. Most PS5 games target 4K output, often using dynamic resolution or reconstruction techniques to balance image quality and frame rate. The console’s ability to connect to an 8K display does not mean that every game renders natively at 8K, nor that 8K is the normal gaming mode.
At launch, Sony described 8K output as dependent on a future system-software update and compatible software. This led to confusion because early packaging and specifications advertised 8K compatibility even though practical 8K game output was limited. The PS5 Pro later made 8K output a more prominent feature, but the quiz answer remains 8K for the PS5 family’s advertised maximum.
