What is the maximum allowed engine displacement for WRC Rally1 cars?

WRC Rally1 cars have a maximum engine displacement of 1.6 liters, or 1,600 cubic centimeters.

The Rally1 regulations use a 1.6-liter turbocharged internal-combustion engine. These engines are paired with hybrid systems under the regulations introduced for the 2022 WRC season, creating the championship’s top-level hybrid rally cars. The engine capacity limit is one part of a broader rules package covering power, weight, aerodynamics, safety and four-wheel drive.

A turbocharged 1.6-liter engine can produce far more performance than the same displacement in an ordinary road car because it forces additional air into the cylinders. Rally1 engines also use an FIA-specified air restrictor, which limits the amount of air entering the turbocharger and helps control power and costs.

The figure is easy to confuse with older rally formulas. Earlier World Rally Cars also commonly used 1.6-liter turbo engines, while some historic or lower-level categories used 2.0-liter, 1.6-liter or smaller engines. For Rally1 specifically, however, 1.6 liters is the regulatory maximum, not merely a typical engine size.
