What is the longest river on the Caribbean island of Cuba?

The story behind the answer

The Cauto River is the longest river on the Caribbean island of Cuba.

The Cauto flows for about 343 kilometres through eastern Cuba before reaching the Gulf of Guacanayabo. Much of its course passes through the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, and Granma, an area known for agriculture and broad lowland landscapes.

Although the Cauto is Cuba’s longest river, it is not the island’s largest by water volume. Eastern Cuba’s climate and terrain influence its flow, and portions of the river are navigable by small craft rather than ocean-going vessels.

The Toa River is another important Cuban river and is often noted for its high rainfall and large discharge. The Almendares, meanwhile, runs through Havana and is culturally prominent, but it is far shorter than the Cauto.
