What is the longest motorway in the United Kingdom?

The story behind the answer

What is the longest motorway in the United Kingdom? The answer is the M6 motorway.

The M6 runs for about 232 miles through England, from the Catthorpe Interchange near Rugby north-west to Gretna, close to the Scottish border. It passes major urban and industrial areas including Coventry, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Warrington, Preston, Lancaster and Carlisle. At its northern end, the route continues toward Scotland as the A74(M), then the M74.

The motorway incorporates the Preston Bypass, which opened in 1958 and is generally regarded as the first motorway in the United Kingdom. Its strategic role is sometimes described as the “Backbone of Britain,” linking the Midlands with north-west England and the Scottish border.

Drivers may confuse the M6 with the M25 because the M25 is Britain’s best-known orbital motorway around London. The M1 is also historically important and extensive, but neither is as long as the M6. Another landmark is Birmingham’s Junction 6, the complex interchange popularly known as Spaghetti Junction.
