What is the largest lake in Mexico?
Answer
Lake Chapala
Answer
Lake Chapala
The largest lake in Mexico is Lake Chapala. This broad freshwater lake lies mainly in Jalisco, with part of its shoreline extending into Michoacán, and covers about 1,100 square kilometres when water levels are near typical conditions.
Lake Chapala sits approximately 45 kilometres southeast of Guadalajara at an elevation of about 1,524 metres. It is relatively shallow, averaging around 7 metres deep, and receives water from rivers including the Lerma and Zula. The lake is also an important source of drinking water for the Guadalajara metropolitan area.
Lake Texcoco is a common historical mix-up. It was once a much larger lake system around the site of present-day Mexico City, but it was progressively drained after the Spanish conquest. Lake Cuitzeo and Lake Pátzcuaro are also major Mexican lakes, yet both are smaller than Chapala.
