What is the largest lake in Central America?

The story behind the answer

Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America. Located in southwestern Nicaragua, it covers about 8,264 square kilometers and is also known by names including Cocibolca, Lake Cocibolca, and the Great Freshwater Sea.

The lake is tectonic in origin and contains more than 400 islands, including Ometepe, Zapatera, and the Solentiname Islands. Ometepe is especially notable because it is formed by two volcanoes rising from the lake. The lake’s low elevation and broad surface allow strong winds to create surprisingly large waves.

Lake Nicaragua drains eastward through the San Juan River toward the Caribbean Sea. Its geography helped make Granada, on the lake’s northwestern shore, an important historical port, even though the lake lies relatively close to the Pacific Ocean. Before the Panama Canal opened, transport routes connected the lake with the Pacific across the Isthmus of Rivas.

Lake Managua is another large Nicaraguan lake, but it is much smaller. Lake Gatún is a major artificial reservoir in Panama, while Lago de Yojoa is Honduras’s largest natural lake; neither surpasses Lake Nicaragua in area.
