What is the largest island in the United States Virgin Islands?

The story behind the answer

Saint Croix is the largest island in the United States Virgin Islands.

The island lies south of the other principal U.S. Virgin Islands, Saint Thomas and Saint John, and is separated from them by deep water. Christiansted and Frederiksted are two of its best-known historic towns. Christiansted’s historic district is associated with the Danish colonial period.

Saint Croix became part of the United States in 1917, when the United States purchased the Danish West Indies from Denmark. The U.S. Virgin Islands now form an unincorporated territory of the United States.

A common mix-up is to identify Saint Thomas as the largest because it is especially well known for tourism and Charlotte Amalie. Saint Thomas is important commercially, but Saint Croix is larger in land area.
