What is the largest continent in the world?

The story behind the answer

The largest continent in the world is Asia.

Asia covers about 44.58 million square kilometres, making it the largest of the seven traditionally recognised continents. It accounts for roughly 30% of Earth’s land area and about 9% of the planet’s total surface area. It also has the world’s longest coastline, stretching approximately 62,800 kilometres.

The continent extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south, and from the Pacific Ocean in the east to the conventional Europe–Asia boundary in the west. That boundary is often drawn along features such as the Ural Mountains, the Caspian Sea, and the Caucasus.

A common mix-up is the idea that Asia must be entirely separate from Europe geographically. Many geographers view them as one continuous landmass called Eurasia, but the seven-continent model treats Asia and Europe as separate continents. Asia includes 49 countries and contains the Himalayas, the world’s highest mountain range.
