What is the largest city in New Zealand?

The story behind the answer

Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand. It is the country’s most populous urban area and its leading metropolitan and economic centre.

Auckland sits on a narrow volcanic isthmus between the Waitematā Harbour on the Pacific Ocean and the Manukau Harbour on the Tasman Sea. The surrounding region includes roughly 53 volcanic centres, while the wider Auckland urban area stretches across much more than the central business district. The city is often nicknamed the “City of Sails” because of its maritime setting and sailing culture.

The area was an important Māori settlement long before European colonisation. Auckland was chosen as New Zealand’s colonial capital in 1840, but the capital moved to Wellington in 1865 because Wellington was more centrally located. Auckland nevertheless continued to expand through port activity, trade, manufacturing and growth in the surrounding region.

A common mix-up is Wellington, which is the national capital, or Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island. Neither is New Zealand’s largest city overall; Auckland remains the country’s population leader.
