“Jukebox” is the internal name for Mario Kart World’s automatic music-selection system in Free Roam.
Free Roam is designed for open-ended driving rather than a single fixed race. To support that freedom, the music team created a system that automatically selects and plays tracks from a large library while players explore the world.
The jukebox system is linked to Mario Kart World's unusually extensive musical production. More than 200 original arrangements were created for it, including new interpretations of themes from earlier Mario games and arrangements in several musical styles.
The term refers to the game's internal development name, not a playable mode or a physical item. It is also distinct from the soundtrack itself: the soundtrack is the collection of music, while the jukebox is the system that chooses music during open-ended play.
