What is the highest point on the island of Puerto Rico?

The story behind the answer

Cerro de Punta is the highest point on the island of Puerto Rico, reaching about 1,338 metres.

The summit is in the Cordillera Central, near the boundary between the municipalities of Ponce and Jayuya. Unlike the often-visited El Yunque, which is the highest mountain in the Luquillo Mountains, Cerro de Punta is Puerto Rico’s overall high point.

The mountain lies in a rugged interior region marked by steep slopes, forest, and winding roads. Its name means “Peak Hill” in Spanish, a straightforward description that is also used for several other summits in Spanish-speaking regions.

Puerto Rico’s highest point is sometimes confused with El Yunque because El Yunque National Forest is the island’s best-known mountain destination. El Yunque itself is lower, with El Yunque peak reaching about 1,080 metres.
