What is the highest peak in Fiji?

The story behind the answer

Mount Tomanivi is the highest peak in Fiji. Rising to 1,324 metres, it stands in the northern highlands of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island.

The mountain is an extinct volcano, formerly known as Mount Victoria and also spelled Tomaniivi. Several of Fiji’s major rivers, including the Rewa, Navua, Sigatoka and Ba, have headwaters in the central highlands around it.

Tomanivi is more than a geographical high point. Its upper slopes contain important montane forest, supporting rare birds such as the critically endangered red-throated lorikeet, long-legged warbler, shy ground-dove and pink-billed parrotfinch. A large forest block around the mountain is recognized as the Greater Tomaniivi Important Bird Area.

A common mix-up is Mount Victoria: that is an older name for Tomanivi, not a separate higher mountain in Fiji. Another possible confusion is Viti Levu itself, which is the island containing the summit. A trail to the peak begins near the village of Navai.
