What is the highest number of points scored in a single NHL season?

The story behind the answer

The highest number of points scored in a single NHL season is 215, achieved by Wayne Gretzky in 1985–86.

Gretzky produced 52 goals and 163 assists in 80 games for the Edmonton Oilers. His 163 assists were also a single-season record, and his 215 points remain the league’s benchmark. The season was the fourth time in five years that he surpassed 200 points.

The closest challenge came from Mario Lemieux, who recorded 199 points in 1988–89. No other player has reached 200 points in a regular NHL season. Gretzky’s earlier totals included 212 points in 1981–82, 205 in 1983–84 and 208 in 1984–85, illustrating how far ahead his peak seasons were.

This record refers to regular-season points, with one point awarded for each goal or assist. It does not include playoff scoring. Gretzky’s 1985–86 Edmonton team also won the Presidents’ Trophy, although it was eliminated by Calgary in the second playoff round.
