What is the highest mountain on Earth above sea level?

The story behind the answer

Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth above sea level. Its jointly recognized elevation is 8,848.86 meters, or about 29,031.7 feet, according to a 2020 survey by Nepal and China.

Everest lies in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and China's Tibet Autonomous Region. In Nepal it is called Sagarmatha, while its Tibetan name is Qomolangma. The mountain was known as Peak XV during the surveying work that established its exceptional height.

Everest is sometimes confused with other definitions of “highest.” Chimborazo in Ecuador is farther from Earth's center because of the planet's equatorial bulge, while Mauna Kea is taller when measured from its underwater base. By the standard used in this question—elevation above sea level—Everest is unquestionably the world's highest mountain.
