What is the highest mountain in the Caribbean?
Answer
Pico Duarte
Answer
Pico Duarte
Pico Duarte is the highest mountain in the Caribbean, rising to 3,098 metres.
The mountain stands in the Cordillera Central of Hispaniola, the island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Its summit is within the Dominican Republic, in a rugged interior region protected by national parks and crossed by hiking routes.
Pico Duarte was formerly known as La Pelona Grande in some historical descriptions. The mountain is named after Juan Pablo Duarte, a leading founder of the Dominican Republic. It is often compared with Jamaica’s Blue Mountain Peak and Cuba’s Pico Turquino, but both are substantially lower.
The summit environment is cooler and more pine-covered than the tropical coasts. Hispaniola’s Cordillera Central also contains other high peaks, helping explain why the island has the Caribbean’s most mountainous interior.
