What is the highest mountain in Mexico?

The story behind the answer

The highest mountain in Mexico is Pico de Orizaba, also called Citlaltépetl. This active, currently dormant stratovolcano rises to about 5,636 metres above sea level on the border of Puebla and Veracruz.

Pico de Orizaba forms part of Mexico’s Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. Its summit is permanently snow-covered in some seasons and contains one of Mexico’s remaining glaciers. The volcano last erupted in the 19th century, so it is dormant rather than extinct.

A common mix-up is Popocatépetl, which is Mexico’s second-highest mountain and one of the country’s most active volcanoes. Iztaccíhuatl is another major Mexican peak, while Nevado de Toluca is lower. Pico de Orizaba is also the highest volcano in North America and the continent’s third-highest peak overall, after Denali and Mount Logan.
