What is the height of the Matterhorn in meters?

The story behind the answer

What is the height of the Matterhorn in meters? The answer is 4,478 metres. The mountain’s summit rises 4,478 metres above sea level, making it one of the best-known high peaks in the Alps.

The Matterhorn stands on the Swiss-Italian border in the Pennine Alps, overlooking Zermatt in Switzerland and Breuil-Cervinia in Italy. Its near-symmetrical pyramid shape is formed by four steep faces separated by ridges pointing roughly toward the cardinal directions.

The published height has changed slightly as surveying methods improved. Earlier measurements produced figures such as 4,482 and 4,505 metres, while GPS measurements in 1999 established a more precise elevation close to the modern rounded figure of 4,478 metres.

The Matterhorn has two summits connected by an exposed rocky crest, with the international border running along that crest. The mountain became famous after Edward Whymper and his party made the first successful ascent on 14 July 1865, though four climbers died during the descent.
