What is the height of Mount Everest above sea level, according to the 2020 official measurement?

The story behind the answer

Mount Everest’s official 2020 height is 8,848.86 metres above sea level. Nepal and China announced this jointly measured figure in December 2020, replacing the earlier commonly cited height of 8,848 metres.

Everest is part of the Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The mountain is still rising slowly because the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates continue to converge, although erosion and geological processes also affect its measured elevation.

Different figures can appear because surveys use different reference points, measurement techniques and definitions of snow or rock summit. The 2020 figure includes the snow and ice cap at the summit and is the standard jointly announced elevation used by Nepal and China.
