What is the Hebrew name for the Book of Psalms in the Jewish Bible?

The story behind the answer

The Hebrew name for the Book of Psalms in the Jewish Bible is Tehillim.

Tehillim means “praises” and reflects the collection's many hymns of praise, prayer, thanksgiving, lament, and trust in God. The book contains 150 psalms in the standard Jewish and Christian numbering, although some traditions divide or number individual psalms differently.

The Psalms are traditionally associated especially with King David, but their headings also mention figures such as Asaph and the sons of Korah. Jewish scholarship recognizes that the collection developed over time rather than necessarily being written by one person.

Tehillim remains important in Jewish worship and personal devotion. Psalms are recited in daily services, at times of illness or danger, and during many festivals. “Mishlei” is Proverbs, “Iyov” is Job, and “Devarim” is Deuteronomy.
