In the Jewish calendar, which month contains Yom Kippur?
Answer
Tishrei
Answer
Tishrei
In the Jewish calendar, Tishrei is the month that contains Yom Kippur.
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, falls on 10 Tishrei. Tishrei is the seventh month when counted from Nisan, the month of the Exodus, but it begins the civil year in the traditional Jewish calendar. Its name derives from the Babylonian Akkadian month name Tašrītu, meaning “beginning.”
Tishrei is especially significant because it contains several major Jewish holy days. Rosh Hashanah occurs on 1 and 2 Tishrei, Yom Kippur on 10 Tishrei, and Sukkot begins on 15 Tishrei. Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah follow near the month’s end.
A common mix-up is calling Tishrei the first month in every sense. Nisan is the first month for counting the months in the Torah, while Tishrei marks the traditional Jewish New Year and the beginning of the calendar’s annual cycle.
