What is the full English title of the novel Don Quixote?

The story behind the answer

The full English title of the novel Don Quixote is The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha.

Miguel de Cervantes published the first part in 1605 under the Spanish title El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha. The word hidalgo refers to a member of the lesser nobility; many English translators render it as “gentleman,” while others retain “hidalgo.”

The second part appeared in 1615, with caballero replacing hidalgo in the Spanish title. Despite these wording differences, “The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha” is the standard English title used in many references. Don Quixote is also commonly shortened to simply Don Quixote, which can cause confusion between the novel and its protagonist.

The novel follows Alonso Quixano, a reader of chivalric romances who reinvents himself as the knight-errant Don Quixote. Its blend of comedy, adventure, metafiction, and social satire helped establish it as a foundational work of the modern novel.
