What is the fire-breathing family symbol of House Targaryen in "Game of Thrones"?

The story behind the answer

The fire-breathing family symbol of House Targaryen is a three-headed red dragon. In Game of Thrones, the dragon is shown on a black field and represents the dynasty’s Valyrian heritage and power.

The Targaryens are descended from dragonlords who came from Valyria. Before the Doom of Valyria, the family relocated to Dragonstone, an island fortress off the coast of Westeros. From there, Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys began the conquest that united much of Westeros under Targaryen rule.

The three heads are often connected symbolically with Aegon and his two sister-wives, each of whom rode a dragon during the conquest. The family’s words, “Fire and Blood,” reinforce the imagery of flame, dragons, warfare, and inheritance.

The emblem is a sigil, not a depiction of one ordinary three-headed dragon living in the story. It is also separate from Daenerys Targaryen’s three individual dragons: Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion. In the books, the heraldic creature is technically a two-legged dragon or wyvern, though the television imagery is commonly described simply as a dragon.
