What is the fictional world visited through the wardrobe in C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books?

The story behind the answer

The fictional world visited through the wardrobe in C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books is Narnia. It is the central setting of all seven novels in The Chronicles of Narnia.

Narnia contains talking animals, mythical creatures, human kingdoms, and powerful supernatural figures. Aslan, a talking lion, is its principal guardian and creator within the series. The stories cover a long span of Narnian history, from its creation to its final destruction.

Narnia is not the same setting as Middle-earth, which was created by J.R.R. Tolkien, Lewis’s friend and fellow Oxford academic. Lewis’s world also differs from Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea and from traditional historical locations that appear in some of his other fiction. The wardrobe is one route into Narnia, but characters also reach it through magic rings, paintings, and other crossings.
