Quenya is Tolkien’s Elvish language commonly associated with High-elven speech.
In Tolkien’s linguistic history, Quenya developed from the speech of Elves who reached Aman, the Blessed Realm. It became a language of learning, ceremony, poetry, and tradition among many Elves in Middle-earth, rather than the everyday language of all Elves there.
Sindarin is the main Elvish language heard in much of The Lord of the Rings, especially among the Sindar and other Elves of Beleriand and Middle-earth. This difference is a common source of confusion: Quenya has high prestige and an ancient status, while Sindarin is more widely used in many narrative settings.
Tolkien built Quenya with detailed grammar, vocabulary, and historical development. Its sound and structure were influenced partly by languages such as Finnish, but it remains an invented language with its own fictional evolution. Names such as Eärendil and phrases such as “Namárië” are associated with Tolkien’s Elvish linguistic work.
