Amon Sûl
What is the Elvish name for the hill known as Weathertop? The Elvish name for Weathertop is Amon Sûl. The name is Sindarin, one of Tolkien's principal Elvish languages, and is associated with the hill's importance in the northern realm of Eriador. Weathertop was the highest hill in the Weather Hills and stood near the Great East Road.
During the time of Arnor, the Dúnedain built a tower on its summit and placed a palantír there. After Arnor divided into Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur, Amon Sûl became strategically important because the surviving kingdoms disputed control of the tower and its seeing-stone. The Witch-king's forces destroyed the tower in 1409 of the Third Age.
By the time Frodo and his companions passed through the region, only ruins remained. The Nazgûl attacked them there, and the Witch-king stabbed Frodo with a Morgul-blade. Amon Rûdh is a different hill in Beleriand, while Amon Hen and Amon Lhaw are the two hills beside the Falls of Rauros. Those similar names are the main source of confusion.
