Mithlond is the Elvish name for the Grey Havens in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
The Grey Havens are a port on the Gulf of Lhûn in north-western Middle-earth. In Tolkien’s Sindarin language, the name Mithlond means “Grey Havens.” The settlement was founded by the Sindar after the destruction of Beleriand at the end of the First Age.
Círdan the Shipwright rules the havens and builds the vessels used by Elves departing Middle-earth. The port is therefore closely connected with the Elvish journey west across the sea to Aman, often called the Undying Lands in popular descriptions.
Mithlond should not be confused with Imladris, the Elvish name for Rivendell, or Lothlórien, the woodland realm associated with Galadriel and Celeborn. The Grey Havens are especially important at the end of The Lord of the Rings, when Frodo and other characters leave Middle-earth.
