What is the Elvish name for Rivendell in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works?

The story behind the answer

Imladris is the Elvish name for Rivendell in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. The name comes from Sindarin, one of Tolkien’s invented Elvish languages, and is commonly explained as meaning a deep valley or ravine.

Rivendell is a hidden refuge in a valley east of the Misty Mountains. Elrond establishes and rules it, and the house becomes an important center of learning, healing, and counsel.

In The Hobbit, Bilbo and the Dwarves visit Rivendell during their journey to Erebor. In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo recovers there after being wounded and the Council of Elrond debates what should be done with the One Ring.

Imladris should not be confused with Lothlórien, another Elven realm. Eregion was an earlier Elven land near the Misty Mountains, while Lindon lay west of the mountains.
