That year appears because the game includes pioneering automobiles such as the Benz Patent Motor Wagen and the Daimler Motor Carriage. Both are associated with the earliest development of practical petrol-powered road vehicles, placing them at the very beginning of automotive history.
Carl Benz’s Patent-Motorwagen was patented in 1886 and is widely regarded as one of the first purpose-built automobiles. Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach also developed an early motor carriage around the same period. Gran Turismo 4 turns these slow, historically important machines into unusual prize cars alongside modern sports cars and racing prototypes.
The year can be easy to confuse with later landmark vehicles such as the Ford Model T, represented by a 1915 model, or other early twentieth-century cars. In GT4, however, the two 1886 entries are the earliest model-year vehicles in the game.
