What is the doctor's name in Lovecraft's 'Cool Air'?

The story behind the answer

The doctor in Lovecraft’s “Cool Air” is Dr. Muñoz. He is a brilliant, reclusive Spanish physician whom the unnamed narrator meets after moving into a New York brownstone in the spring of 1923.

Muñoz initially appears to be an exceptionally skilled doctor. He treats the narrator during a heart attack and later discusses medicine, science, and his lifelong determination to defeat death. His apartment, however, must be kept unnaturally cold. An ammonia-based refrigeration system, powered by a gasoline engine, maintains a temperature of about 56 degrees Fahrenheit, later becoming even colder as Muñoz’s condition deteriorates.

When the cooling machinery fails, Muñoz desperately relies on ice to preserve himself. The final revelation is that he died 18 years earlier and has been using refrigeration and other methods to delay decomposition. The story was written in March 1926 and published in Tales of Magic and Mystery in March 1928. The name is sometimes simplified as “Munoz,” but “Muñoz” is the canonical spelling in the story.
