What is the distance of Sweden’s traditional Vasaloppet cross-country ski race?
Answer
90 kilometres
Answer
90 kilometres
The traditional Vasaloppet cross-country ski race covers 90 kilometres. It runs through Sweden’s Dalarna region from Sälen to Mora and is one of the world’s best-known long-distance ski races.
The first Vasaloppet took place in 1922. Its name refers to King Gustav Vasa, who, according to tradition, fled through the region on skis in the sixteenth century while escaping Danish forces. The race is held in the classic technique, meaning competitors follow prepared tracks rather than skating freely across the course.
Tens of thousands of skiers take part in Vasaloppet Week events, although the main race has a limited field. The course includes forests, villages, aid stations, and several substantial climbs.
The 90-kilometre distance is often confused with shorter races in the Vasaloppet festival. Those events include shorter recreational and competitive formats, but the historic main race remains 90 kilometres.
